Log, kept by Hartson H. Bodfish, comprised of two whaling voyages. First voyage documents the Grampus (Steam Barkentine) of San Francisco, Calif., mastered by Henry G. Dexter, from 11 February 1888-5 November 1888 to the Arctic Ocean and Chukchi Sea. Includes descriptions of types of whales (bowhead, finback, right) and seals seen or taken, accidents at sea, interactions with indigenous peoples, rescues, and shipwrecks. Also contains navigation data at the back of the journal as well as a description of trade with the natives in the area. During the voyage, the dog fell overboard but jumped on the ice and was saved. Other places represented include Port Clarence, Point Hope, Cape Smyth, Point Barrow, Harrison Bay, and Camden Bay. Second voyage documents the Grampus (Steam Barkentine) of San Francisco, Calif., mastered by Henry G. Dexter from 26 February 1889 - 12 November 1889 to the Arctic Ocean and Chukchi Sea. Includes descriptions of types of whales, walrus, and polar bears seen or taken, interactions with indigenous people, and punishment on ship. Also contains navigation data. Other places represented include Unalaska, Saint Lawrence Island, Port Clarence, Cape Smyth, Point Barrow, Harrison Bay, and Herschel Island.
